Parent & Carer Workshop 1, Time to Talk Next Steps

Time to Talk Next Steps provides free support for young people aged 16-25 years in England with additional needs. In partnership with the National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi), Contact are providing support, information and workshops for parents and carers about transition to adulthood.

These sessions will explore how parents and carers can support their young people into adulthood by exploring the four topics below:

Workshop 1: Rights and Decision Making, Wellbeing for Parent/Carers (21 October 2021, 10:00-12:00)

  • Preparing for Adult Life, an overview and timeline
  • Supporting Decision Making
  • Your needs as a carer
  • Further help – from local and national agencies
  • Further support - from Contact and the Time to Talk Next Steps project

Workshop 2: Education and Employment (13 January 2022, 12:00-14:00)

  • Education and training options, rights to education up to age 25
  • EHC plans from age 14 to 25 and writing PfA outcomes in EHCPs
  • Support for young people without EHCPs
  • Transport and travel training
  • Moving into employment

Workshop 3: Health and Social Care (04 April 2022, 19:00-21:00)

  • Using Person-centred planning to plan for transition to adulthood
  • Adult Social Care – transition assessments and carers assessments
  • Adult Health – including transferring from pediatric services to adult health teams, annual health checks, Continuing Health Care (CHC) funding and personal health budgets (PHBs)

Workshop 4: Planning for Independent Living and Community Inclusion (20 June 2022, 10:00-12:00)

  • Money and Benefits for you and your young person - including Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Universal Credit, and contributing to care costs
  • Wills and Trusts
  • Secondary transitions and assessments
  • Independent Living – choices for housing, relationships, employment and activities
  • Using health and social care support to further community inclusion
