A new report by Dr. Victoria Mason-Angelow from NDTi looks at how Supported Internships are changing lives in Somerset. It focuses on how these programmes improve people’s wellbeing and how they create value for society and the economy.

The report centres on the real-life experiences of four young people in Somerset who recently took part in a Supported Internship and shared their stories.

Across the UK, only 5% of people with a learning disability are in paid work. Supported Internships are helping to change this. The national Internships Work programme has been extended to 2026 to continue improving these opportunities. Supported Internships help young people build skills, confidence, and careers—while also showing employers and communities the value of inclusive employment.

Since 2021, more than 180 young people in Somerset have taken part. The results have been life-changing:

  • Sophie is now a swimming assistant, leading classes.

  • Isla, once too anxious to speak to others, now works full-time in hospital IT.

  • James is thriving in a data role at an aerospace company.

  • Noah works in a hospital training centre and is becoming more independent.

What's the value?

The report found that just four internships created:

  • Over £355,000 in social and economic value.
  • An average return of £9.35 for every £1 invested.
  • Real benefits for employers, such as stronger team morale and more inclusive workplaces.

Why it works

Supported Internships succeed because they include:

  • Job coaches who guide, support, and advocate

  • Real jobs matched to young people’s interests and strengths

  • Strong relationships between interns, families, and employers

  • Flexible, person-centred support

What’s next?

This report shows what’s possible when young people get the right support at the right time. It highlights the need for more investment, wider access (especially for young people without Education, Health and Care Plans), and better tracking of long-term outcomes.

Supported Internships aren’t just about jobs—they’re about helping every young person feel valued, included, and capable of building a future.
