Change that leads to better lives

Julie Pointer, Programme Lead Children and Young People

Julie Pointer

Julie is a qualified social worker who has worked to improve opportunities for disabled people for many years.

She has worked in a number of local authorities, both as a front line practitioner and at a leadership level, and started her career working as a residential social worker in several homes for young people.

Julie joined NDTi after a short secondment as the Delivery Manager for the highly regarded Preparing for Adulthood programme in April 2015.

Since being with NDTi Julie has taken on the role of Children and Young People programme lead and has worked with colleagues to deliver the Preparing for Adulthood programme (funded by DfE) and the SEND Leadership programme for the past 8 years, as well as more recently supporting colleagues to set up and run the Time to Talk and Time to Talk next steps programmes.

This year NDTi are very excited to be working with partners, BASE and DfN Project Search to run the Internships Work programme to get more young people with additional needs into supported internships and ultimately into the world of work.

Julie is passionate about inclusion at every level and ensuring that disabled young people have the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers.

She has worked in the field that we strangely call "Transition" for around 20 years and worked on the National Transition Support Programme, and Aspirations for Life as a consultant with Paradigm.

Julie believes that person centred approaches provide the key to ensuring disabled young people and their families are central to any plans for their future, and that the best services are those that are designed by those who are going to use them.

In her spare time Julie really enjoys sport, particularly playing netball and tennis. She lives with her drummer playing partner and has one grown up son. Along with her partner and son Julie has rescued 5 cats over the years.
