Local Services for Local People

A major strand of NDTi work is to support local services to have the skills and knowledge to support everyone in their local communities – not matter how complex their needs. People should not have to be sent away from their area because there are not the local services and supports available that they require.

The learning disability strand of this work includes the following:

  • We have developed the DH’s commissioning good practice guidance for local commissioners on how to deliver the Mansell Report i.e. Services for people who are labelled as challenging.
  • A quick audit based on this guidance that NDTi can undertake for local commissioners to help them work up a development and change agenda for delivering the Mansell report. Information about the audit can be downloaded from the Related Downloads section on the right of this page.
  • A DH-funded project to see how private sector learning disability hospitals can be supported to change. For a copy of the report click here and for an NDTi commentary on the implications of this work in the light of the Winterbourne View abuse, click here.
  • NDTi has been centrally involved in the national response to the Panorama programme about abuse at Winterbourne View. Click here for a copy of the NDTi’s own press release about it and click here for a copy of the National repsonse that went to the Prime Minister
  • See the Related download for a presentation made by Rob Greig at the recent NDTi conference on “learning the lessons from Winterbourne View”, that particularly focuses on the commissioning solutions to delivering better services for people who challenge services.
