Next Generation is about making sure your services are prepared for the future.
We want to make sure tomorrow’s leaders have the right skills and knowledge to do things differently and drive forward change.
The programme focuses on values, rights, coproduction and inclusion. It’s about the things that really matter to people and what’s needed to make change happen.
Who can join the programme?
The programme is suitable for leaders who are ready to take the next step. You will be working in, or commissioning:
- Learning disability and autism services
- Independent advocacy
- Older people’s services
- Social care
You will be in your first leadership role or have the potential to do so. Next Generation will also prepare you to take on a senior leadership role in the next three to five years.
Next Generation explores:
- A detailed focus on leadership, personal style and achieving change.
- The leadership styles needed to deliver rights, choice and control within the current economic climate.
- Leading edge practice sessions on key policy priorities.
The programme is updated each year to be as relevant as possible to the leaders we work with.
We’re now in our 15th year of tailoring the programme in line with the current climate and the needs of leaders.
How is the programme delivered?
Delivery weaves together presentations, guest speakers, group work, individual reflection and action planning.
There will a number of shared sessions, together with the option to join your choice of subject specific modules based on your area of work.
This includes:
- An online introductory day
- Two, two day residential events
- Online action learning sets
- Three online themed sessions
We aim for each programme to be delivered to between 25 and 30 participants.
Programme outline
The programme will include:
1. An introduction day (online) where each participant will be invited to introduce themselves, their leadership vision and challenges. The day will also includes opportunities to coproduce elements of the programme’s focus and delivery
2. Two two-day residential events which will include:
• A long view history of services
• Listening to the voices of people with lived experience as leaders in understanding the impact of policy and services
• National policy history, current and future
• Understanding human rights and understanding how they should be protected
• Exploring your personal leadership journey and desired destination
• Bravery and the need for resilience and rising strong
• Being in ‘the arena’
• Styles of leadership, their function, impact and limitations.
• How effective teams operate (both established and emerging thinking)
• Personal experiences of establishing and leading creative organisations and systems
• Understanding organisations
• Achieving change through both management responsibility and the use of influence and engagement
• Adapting and using existing systems to deliver different solutions and outcomes
• Large group interventions, design, use and coproduction
• Reflections on own organisations/team
• Developing participants ongoing leadership plans.
3. Action learning sets (online) focusing on practice and problem solving
4. Three themed sessions (online) giving participants the opportunity to explore establish and emerging best practice in delivery areas. These are open to change based on participants needs but we anticipate will include:
• Unleashing creative commissioning in developing both the market and better outcomes for individuals
• Understanding and building community
• Developing and leading radical organisations

The cost
The cost covers the introductory day, two x two day residential events, residential costs, three action learning sets, three theme days and all course materials.
£1800 (+VAT) per participant
All applicants will need to have funding in place in advance.
We can offer a split payment option.
Cancellation fees apply. If you cancel your place after the programme’s set cancellation date (the date will be provided here for each cohort), there will be a £450 charge to cover the cancellation fees we will have to pay the conference venue for your room.
