Dr Karen McInnes

Karen joined NDTi in May 2021 as Evaluation Manager. She is an experienced educator and researcher. Karen is a qualified early years teacher, lecturer and play therapist and has taught both subjects, as well as psychology, at various UK universities.

She has a strong interest in play and playfulness and has published extensively in this area. Her PhD research used mixed methods to explore the value of play and playfulness for young children’s learning and how teachers facilitate this. Karen was a member of Barnardo’s policy and research team conducting research and evaluations with children and families on issues such as parenting, substance misuse and domestic abuse. During this time, she was also an evaluator for a Sure Start children’s centre. Most recently Karen was research fellow and head of teaching, learning and research at Norland College conducting evaluations and developing research within the college. She is experienced in all stages of the research process including research design, literature reviews, qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, analysing data and presentation of findings.
