Andrew Tyson

Andrew is a registered social worker and an independent facilitator, trainer, writer and speaker. He now lives in the city of Oxford.

He qualified with a Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Sussex in 1982.

In addition to his social work qualification, Andrew holds an MA degree in Management and Community Care and is an accredited interpersonal mediation practitioner,

Andrew has worked for around thirty years in local authorities as a practitioner, a manager and commissioner of health and social care services, mainly to support people with mental health issues and for people with learning difficulties.

Between 1999 and 2005, he was strategic commissioner for health and social care services for adults with learning difficulties in West Sussex. Between 2005 and 2011 he worked for the organisation In Control, which pioneered self-directed support and personal budgets. He is the author, with allies from the independent living movement of a book entitled 'Personalisation and Learning Disabilities' (OLM Pavilion, February 2011).

Until 2019 Andrew was a member of the team delivering NDTi’s Community :Led Support programme, where he took a particular interest in issues for people with a learning disability.

In 2019, Andrew took the decision to work more locally and less nationally. In the year 2020 he became a trustee of Refugee Resource, an Oxford-based organisation providing counselling, psychotherapy and mentoring services to refugees and asylum-seekers in Oxfordshire and beyond. He takes the lead-trustee role for safeguarding within the organisation.
