Person Centred Approaches

Personalisation is the new ‘buzz-word’. To the NDTi it is centrally about the ‘independent living’ agenda - people having choice and control over the supports they need to live the life that they want in their communities. Being person centred is therefore at the heart of personalisation – but it is about more than just using new words. Services to work in new ways that genuinely put the individual at the centre of decision-making about their life, and the services and supports they want and need.

The NDTi’s Personalisation and Person Centred Approaches programme operates at all levels to help make this a reality. From working with Government to develop guidance on personalisation, mental health and older people, through to practical training with self-advocates and families, some of our key current areas of work are as follows:

  • A framework to reviewing the impact of person centred strategies – looking at whether current investment in person centred planning and approaches is resulting in people really getting control of their lives and services and services changing and improving as a result
  • Person centred approach training - the NDTi has a range of training and learning programmes to support managers and staff to understand person centred approaches, including learning sets for key leaders in person centred approaches, awareness raising training for provider organisation staff and training in a range of person centred tools and techniques
  • Families, Friends and Circles of Support – how to develop them and ensure they are a key influence in the personalisation agenda
  • A framework for instigating the development of Support Brokerage, a key resource for people with direct payments and individual budgets and Independent support broker training – where the NDT has led the field in its development, funded by both the Department of Health and Skills for Care
  • The Commissioner/Provider Programme. This brings together commissioners and providers across a group of authorities to explore how they need to work together, getting beyond the straitjacket of the ‘market economy’ to deliver the personalisation agenda
  • Practicalities and Possibilities:A focused approach to embedding person centred approaches with and for older people, offering general awareness raising and an introduction to the core person centred thinking skills adapted to meet the specific needs and circumstances of older people who need support in their lives.

Analysing and repairing risk-averse or reckless team cultures in health and social care settings

Teams vary in their response to risk, even when they are following the same policies and supporting similar people.

The NDTi has considered relevant literature and completed some initial pilot work to create CAIRO – the Climate Assessment Inventory for Risk and Opportunity. We are now inviting teams to join us in the next development stage of CAIRO. read more
